March 2004: "You Ain't A Cowboy"
On March 18, Members of TrueMajority.org were given a special preview of a new song off Stephan's album
Slash and Burn.
"You Ain't A Cowboy" is a scathing, humorous
comment on the current occupant of the White House.
"Forget the war, the election hoax too," says Smith. "The big
problem with George junior is that he's a rich New England frat
boy posing like a cowboy ... That's the worst lie you could perpetrate
on the American people. Will Rogers is turning in his grave."
The song is being offered to TrueMajority.org's 400,000-plus membership in a free streaming version and as a
downloadable MP3 for 99 cents. Stephan, Artemis
Records, and Audio Lunchbox are donating their profits from the sale to support TrueMajority's ongoing programs.

2003: "The Bell" EP
This 8 track disk includes the original studio recording of "The Bell," which features the legendary
Pete Seeger, Dean Ween, and Mary Harris, as well as a remix of "The Bell" by DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid,
a roots/country version of the song by Tara Nevins, a spoken word recitation by Pete Seeger, and a live
recording of Stephan singing "The Bell" at a rally from the foot of the Washington Monument.
Based on a medieval ballad, "The False Knight on the Road," this anti-war song couldn't be more relevant today.
The recording was first released to radio and through the Internet to mark the anniversary of 9/11. Response to
the song was so strong, DJ Spooky suggested releasing "The Bell" as an EP through his label, Synchronic, as a
way to spread the anti-war message. It became the most played peace song on public and college radio during the
war in 2003, with over 140 radio stations adding it to their regular rotations.
Download "The Bell" as MP3.
Amusic video for "The Bell,"
by director Kurt St. Thomas, features rare footage of peace vigils in New York during the weeks
after 9/11, as well as images of recent anti-war demonstrations from around the world. These pictures
have been absent from the mainstream media. A Quicktime version of the video is on "The Bell" EP. To
see the video online, click here.
Some footage from "The Bell" video was provided by the New York Independent Media Center.
We send a warm, sincere shout out to the IMC! If you haven't checked out the IMC lately, you should
